SUUG Charity Registration

Motion to adopt new Memorandum and Articles of Association

The Students' Union is currently in the process of applying for charity status. In order to continue with this process, I agree that the Students' Union University of Greenwich must comply with its legal and administrative obligations; we need just 500 votes to do so. Therefore, I agree that this Union resolves that the new governing document ‘MEMORANDUM AND ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS’ UNION UNIVERSITY OF GREENWICH’ (available at www.suug.co.uk/aboutus/documentation/) be adopted.

Proposed by Arun Thakral, President, Students’ Union University of Greenwich

This Union Notes:
1) That the Students’ Union University of Greenwich is required by legislation: The Charities Act 2006, to formally register as a charity.
2) That the important information regarding formal registration is stored within a document referred to as a ‘Memorandum & Articles’.
3) That this document must formally become part of the SUUG constitution in order to take effect. 4) That in order to change the SUUG constitution a referendum is required to pass the Memorandum & Articles, and thus legally comply.

This Union Believes:
1) That we must comply with our legal and administrative obligations.
2) That we should therefore send a motion to referenda to make the necessary changes to the constitution and include the Memorandum & Articles.
3) That this Council should support these changes as they bring us in line with our legal and administrative obligations and limit the liability that Sabbatical Trustees and Student Trustees have in governing the organisation.

So the motion that will be put to you as our membership in the referendum coming later this month is:

Motion to adopt new Memorandum and Articles of Association
I agree that the Student Union University of Greenwich must comply with its legal and administrative obligations.
