We are aware that some students in private rented accommodation may be struggling to pay their rent as they are in financial difficulty. They may either have lost their job, been put on reduced pay or cannot continue any self-employed work as a result of the Covid-19.
You are still liable to pay the rent as usual if you have signed an agreement for the length of the fixed term unless there is a break off clause in the contract. We advise that you continue to pay the rent if you can afford it. If you cannot, then you must contact your landlord and try to see if the landlord is willing to accept a temporary reduction in your rent. We advise that you work out what you need for essentials (food, Bills, etc) and then write to your landlord.
Further advice on this can be found on the Shelter website as well as a template to guide you in what your letter should include.
We have also compiled some top tips which you can find here.
Students at the University of Greenwich can make applications to the Greenwich Hardship fund if they are suffering financial difficulties as a result of the Covid -19 outbreak.
If you need any further advice on making an application, please contact the student finance team firstname.lastname@example.org or email email@example.com
