In September 2025, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent announced plans to come together and form a new ‘super-university’. As of 1st August 2026, Kent and Greenwich have now completed the merger, marking the legal formation of the London and South East University Group – to be known as LASE (opens in new tab).

Following conversations with the Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU) and Kent Students’ Union (KSU) trustee boards around how the University of Greenwich and University of Kent mergers would affect our work, the decision was made that GSU and KSU would also merge to become one organisation to represent students of the new multi-university group.

The merger of Kent Students’ Union and Greenwich Students’ Union has now been successfully completed. This is the start of one of the most ambitious projects in the student movement, bringing together two established students' unions to create a stronger organisation that will deliver an even better experience for students across both universities.

Over the past year, colleagues, trustees and student leaders from both organisations have worked together to carefully plan this transition. Throughout every stage of the process, our focus has remained the same: ensuring students continue to receive the representation, opportunities and support they deserve.

Although both unions are now united as LASE SU, each union will keep its individual name, brand and identity for the current time. This means that Greenwich students will still access their union services from Greenwich Students’ Union (greenwichsu.co.uk) and Kent students will still access their union services from Kent Students’ Union (ksu.co.uk).

Students remain at the heart of everything we do

While today marks a significant milestone for our organisation, much of what students know and value will remain the same.

Whether you're studying at Kent or Greenwich, you'll continue to access the advice, representation, student groups, events and opportunities that make student life rewarding as normal. You'll still be supported by dedicated teams on your campus, with a continued focus on delivering an outstanding student experience where you study.

By bringing our organisations together, we're creating new opportunities to share expertise, invest in our services and develop bigger and better experiences for students. Together, we are now one of the largest students' unions in the country, representing students across one of the UK's largest geographical footprints.

Looking ahead

Over the coming months and years, we'll continue bringing our organisations together by aligning our priorities, co-developing processes and procedures, and building a shared culture that reflects the very best of both Greenwich Students' Union and Kent Students' Union.

As we do this, one thing won't change: students will always be at the centre of everything we do, and elected student leaders and student trustees will help to ensure your priorities remain at the heart of our new organisation. Every decision we make will be guided by our commitment to represent, support and empower students, ensuring they have the opportunities, experiences and voice they deserve.

This is an exciting moment for our students, staff and our elected officers. Together, we're building a students' union with the scale, ambition and expertise to make an even greater impact, not just today, but for generations of students to come.

We'd like to thank everyone who has helped make this possible over the past year. We can't wait to begin this next chapter together.
