Unlocking Students' Potential

At Greenwich Students' Union (GSU), our ambition is to give students the best possible university experience. As we move through a period of transition and change, we remain focused on improving student success, continuation and outcomes through targeted, evidence-led activity. This Bridging Strategy provides clear direction during this period, ensuring we continue to evolve while keeping students at the heart of our work.

Strategic Priorities

Our plan has four main themes, all with a range of outcomes for us to structure our work over the next 18 months. Each theme and its outcomes are listed below.

Champion the best possible academic and learning experiences

Student voice is central to improving academic experience, teaching quality and student success. GSU will champion excellent teaching and learning while co-creating an engaging, inclusive and future-oriented, student experience that supports student success and reflects their lives, communities and ambitions.

Empower students to find their communities at Greenwich to build lifelong skills

A strong sense of belonging is critical to student success, confidence and continuation. As we transition, GSU will empower students to find, create, continue and develop communities that foster connection and belonging, while building networks, leadership and employability skills that support future careers and lifelong development.

Ensure students receive the support they need, when it matters most

Students’ needs evolve throughout their university journey, and timely support depends on early insight. GSU will use student engagement and feedback to anticipate needs and identify pressure points, while responding effectively when unexpected issues arise, enabling earlier intervention and ensuring students feel supported to succeed and progress through their studies.

Make student impact visible

Students are more likely to engage when they can see how their input leads to change. GSU will ensure student ideas, experiences and leadership are visible across our work, and that feedback loops are consistently closed so students understand how their contributions shape a better student experience and partnership with the University.

What will change?

For our students.

Students will experience a more connected, responsive and visible Students’ Union throughout their university journey.

Through an expanded Big Conversation and a consistent, high-quality student voice model, students will have more opportunities to share their experiences, influence decisions and see the impact of their feedback through clear and sustainable feedback loops.

A strengthened welcome programme will provide more than an introduction to university life, creating pathways into communities, support, representation and opportunities that contribute to belonging, continuation and success.

Through societies, sports clubs, events and student leadership opportunities, students will build meaningful connections, develop confidence and wellbeing, and gain skills, experiences and networks that support their future employability and graduate outcomes.

All of this activity will be delivered in a scaleable model with equitable experiences across all sites as we continue to build our new future.

For our University partners.

University colleagues will benefit from a stronger and more authentic partnership with GSU, informed by timely student insight, meaningful co-creation and effective student representation.

Our activity will complement the Universities and ensure that we collaborate to achieve our shared goals.

Through partnership working, GSU will support institutional priorities around continuation, student success, awarding gap and graduate outcomes while helping more students feel connected, engaged and able to thrive throughout their university journey.

For our staff.

GSU staff will have access to richer and more timely student insight, enabling them to identify emerging needs earlier and focus resources where they can have the greatest impact.

The continued development of the Big Conversation and Programme Representative system will support more evidence-led decision making, stronger evaluation and more sustainable approaches to showcase ours and students’ work.

Staff will work collaboratively across teams to connect representation, communities, support and leadership opportunities, creating a more joined-up student experience.

Success in 18 months

Students know, value and engage with their Students’ Union

More students understand the role GSU plays in their university experience and see it as a relevant and valuable part of their time at Greenwich.

Students engage with GSU in different ways throughout their journey, whether through representation, communities, events, support services or leadership opportunities. Students recognise GSU as a trusted source of support, opportunities and advocacy that helps them make the most of their university experience.

Student voice is visible, influential and embedded

Student voice is recognised as an integral part of decision-making across the University. Students can identify clear examples of where their feedback has informed change and feel confident that their views are listened to and acted upon.

Representation structures are effective, student leaders are supported to influence change, and staff across the University view student partnership as a normal and valuable part of improving the student experience.

More students feel connected to Greenwich

Students are able to find communities, opportunities and experiences that help them feel part of university life.

GSU supports students to develop meaningful connections with their peers, build confidence and participate in activities that reflect their interests, identities and ambitions. Students develop a stronger sense of belonging to both their Students’ Union and the wider University community, contributing positively to their confidence, wellbeing and success.

GSU has successfully merged

GSU has successfully balanced organisational transition with the continued delivery of impactful services and opportunities for students.

Throughout the merger process, students have remained at the heart of decision making and experienced continuity in the support, representation and communities available to them. Student communities and identities have been protected and strengthened, with enhanced opportunities to connect, participate, develop leadership and employability skills, and influence change.

Strong relationships, shared priorities and effective ways of working have been established across both organisations, creating a solid foundation for a successful merged Students’ Union that is positioned to deliver even greater impact for students in the future.
