Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU) has awarded 41 free sports club memberships through this year's Sports Fund for Women, helping more students take their first steps into university sport.
The fund, a part of our This Girl Can campaign, was created to reduce financial barriers for women who are new or returning to university sport and encourage more students to get involved with Team Greenwich and Team Medway.
Following a competitive application process, we received 152 applications from students across the University of Greenwich and the Medway campus community. A total of 26 memberships have been awarded at Greenwich and 15 at Medway.
The strong response highlights the demand for opportunities that make sport more accessible to women. Research shows that 1.3 million girls drop out of sports by the age of 16, with barriers including confidence, cost, representation and previous experience stopping them from continuing over to University Sport. We are committed to tackling those barriers and creating more opportunities for women to take part in sport, whether competitively or socially.
November marks our This Girl Can campaign, celebrating women in sport and encouraging more students to get active, try something new and find their community through sport.
Want to get involved? Visit our 'This Girl Can' webpage to explore This Girl Can events taking place throughout November and find out how to join a club in Team Greenwich or Team Medway.
