We’re excited to announce that the proposed merger of Greenwich Students’ Union and Kent Students’ Union has been confirmed.
We’re excited to announce that the proposed merger of Greenwich Students’ Union and Kent Students’ Union has been confirmed.
In September 2025, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent announced plans to come together and form a new ‘super-university’. These plans have since been confirmed, and the London and South East University Group will come into effect from 1st August 2026. You can read more details on the University of Greenwich website.
Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU) and Kent Students’ Union (KSU) have been having conversations with our trustee boards and universities to discuss how this may impact our work.
The trustee boards of GSU and KSU have now made the decision that, from 1st August 2026, GSU will merge into KSU to become one organisation, which will represent students at both universities as academic divisions of the new multi-university group.
Why have we taken this decision?
We are excited by the opportunity to build a new organisation that will ensure a consistent, high quality student experience across the whole of the London and South East University Group.
We believe that this arrangement to form a new students’ union, which will be known as London and South East Group Students’ Union, or London and South East University Group Students’ Union, depending on regulatory approvals, will allow us to make an even bigger impact for students.
In the end, the trustee board reached the decision to merge GSU into KSU based on the legal forms, operational complexity, and liabilities and assets of each organisation.
What does this mean for you?
Our work in the upcoming academic year will feel much like it did in 2025/26. Our emphasis will continue to be on on-campus delivery, and we will continue to deliver the great advice, events, and activities that we are known for. We will take the next year to build our shared working as we integrate our teams, cultures, and work.
Becoming one organisation means that we will have one trustee board, one organisational identity, and exist as a single charitable entity. Through merging we will become one of the largest students’ unions in the country with one of the largest geographical footprints. This is a big change, but it is also an enormous opportunity for us to make an even bigger impact for you, our students.
We also hope this will open up new opportunities for you to take part in bigger events, new activities, and make new friends while you can still expect your societies, activities, and all the places you go to spend time, meet friends, and get advice, to stay as they are for now.
