Job Purpose:

The Sound and AV Assistant is responsible for ensuring top-quality sound and audio-visual experiences during events organised by the Venue and Events team. This role involves overseeing technical aspects, equipment management, and team coordination to deliver outstanding performances and create memorable experiences for members and guests.

As a Sound and AV Assistant, you will play a vital role in our Late-Night Venues team, contributing your technical expertise and leadership skills to create memorable events and experiences for our vibrant student community. Your dedication to sound quality, equipment management, and team coordination will be essential in ensuring the success and safety of all our events.

Department/Service

The Sound and AV Assistant is part of the Greenwich Students’ Union Commercial Services. At GSU, we turn over £1.1m through our not-for-profit commercial services that provide services to students, staff, and the local population. We provide students at the University of Greenwich with social spaces to study, make friends and have fun.

Additionally, the profit generated through our varied income portfolio is invested back into the SU support services for students. We are a Living Wage Employer and a large employer of students putting money back in their pockets to support studying and living costs in London and Kent.

1 Duty and Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

  • Set up and operate sound and AV equipment for events, ensuring optimal sound quality and visual displays.
  • Monitor audio levels, troubleshoot technical issues, and make adjustments as necessary.
  • Work with performers and presenters to ensure their technical requirements are met.
  • Collaborate with lighting and production teams to synchronize sound and visual elements.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all sound and AV equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections to ensure equipment functionality and safety.
  • Assist with equipment setup, breakdown, and storage before and after events.
  • Coordinate rental and procurement of additional equipment when needed.
  • Provide guidance and training to ensure staff adhere to best practices and safety guidelines.
  • Foster a positive team environment and motivate staff to deliver exceptional performances.

Events and Venue Hire

  • Assist in the planning and execution of various events, from live music shows to themed parties.
  • Collaborate with event organisers to understand technical requirements and preferences.
  • Set up stages, sound systems, microphones, and AV displays as needed.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues during events and make real-time adjustments.
  • Liaise with external vendors, performers, and university partners to coordinate technical needs.
  • Communicate effectively with event organisers and team members to ensure seamless operations.
  • Collaborate with the university Sound and AV Manager to provide input on technical solutions and improvements.

Finance and Reporting

  • Maintain financial controls and ensure the finance department receives all relevant financial information promptly, by GSU’s financial procedures.
  • Maintain detailed records of equipment usage, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Assist in preparing reports and evaluations of sound and AV aspects for each event.
  • Contribute to post-event reviews to identify successes and areas for improvement.
  • Report feedback from customers about the events and services to the Sales and Events Manager.

Health and Safety

  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, including working at heights and equipment safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety checks and risk assessments for sound and AV setups.
  • Recommend improvements to enhance the safety and technical aspects of events.

2 General Responsibilities

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Attributes

  • Proven experience in sound engineering and audio-visual setup.
  • Strong technical proficiency in operating sound and AV equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Effective team leadership and coordination abilities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols in event production.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and openly in all interactions. Must also demonstrate a positive attitude while communicating with clients and co-workers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability and confidence to interact effectively with a wide range of people from different backgrounds.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate evening and weekend events.
  • High attention to detail and a proactive attitude.
  • Ability to work at heights and perform physical tasks related to equipment setup.

Desirable Attributes

  • Previous experience in managing a team of technicians.
  • Familiarity with specific sound and AV equipment, such as KV2 sound systems and Allen & Heath Qu-24 Desk.
  • Knowledge of event production and lighting setups.
  • Background in technical theatre or live performance.
  • Experience with audio mixing software and AV control systems.
  • Basic understanding of cinematic projection and theatre systems.
  • A full, clean driving licence.

  • All Commercial Services staff may be asked to work at other campus outlets on an ad hoc basis to assist with day-to-day operations and events.
