The National Union of Students is calling all students in the UK to join them for a student strike. It is no secret that students have been failed by successive governments, and we need to start over and take matters in our own hands. We want to see a radically different education system and want to build a movement that can make that possible. Collectively, students, workers and communities are building a new vision for education. What if knowledge was shared not sold, and if education was built not bought?
The GSU Officer team has decided to answer NUS’s call for support and collective action and will join the strike. But to make it impactful and have our voices heard, we need you!
Here are the facts:
Where? Tavistock Square, Central London (with the option to travel from Greenwich with us)
When? 2nd March 2022, 12:00 – 16:00 (travelling from Dreadnought at 10:45) Banner Making Session ahead of the student strike on 1st March 1pm-3pm in Room 26 Dreadnought Building.
Why? We want to organise ourselves to call on the government to build a fully funded, accessible, lifelong, and democratised education system.
What? The strike will take the form of a walk out and teach in. This means not attending classes and gathering in Tavistock Square to create our own form of education for the day. We will have informal discussions, share our experiences, and exchange knowledge. This is a popular way of building community through education. A protest, a party, an educational gathering – it is something we collectively come together for. Students from all around the country will be gathering to this event!
And then? We will take what we build on 2nd March back to our campuses and will continue to transform our education. There will be local groups springing up to share knowledge and organise collective campaigns.
We will have a meeting point on the Greenwich campus on the day of the strike to travel into London together, as well as one close to Tavistock Square, so we can attend as a big group of Greenwich students.
The most important thing we at GSU can do to support the strike is showing up on the day with as many people as possible. Students, workers, and staff have used strike action for decades to demonstrate their power. When we come together, we are unstoppable, and we want to come together with you! For us as students and for the next generations of students!
