Coming to University can be exciting and stressful, sometimes both at the same time!
We’d want you to enjoy yourself, and enjoy what your University, Students’ Union and the local community have to offer.

The Safety pages will give you useful information on avoiding being a victim of crime whether you’re at home or out and about, and where you can get additional information and support.

At the same time, it’s worth keeping things in perspective. We reckon that you stand a far higher chance of injuring yourself in your kitchen than you do of being a victim of crime. Act on the suggestions in these pages, and you can reduce this risk.

The SU is committed to ensuring that our events are safe and enjoyable. If, for any reason, you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, or you have witnessed anything that gives you a reason to be concerned, speak to SU staff or the events organiser. Whether you’re living in halls, with family, or in a place of your own, it’s important that your home is a place where you feel safe. There are a few simple steps you can take to help make your home a safe and comfortable environment.
Who has access to your home?
Lock your doors and close your windows when you’re going out, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
If you’re living in halls, all of your rooms will be a lot safer if you and your flatmates agree not to prop the door to the flat open even when you’re expecting people. This could give anyone access to the flat, and also poses a fire risk.
If you don’t know someone, don’t hold the door to let them into halls. If you are expecting guests, ask them to call you when they’re nearby and meet them at the door to the building.
Don’t leave valuable items (Computer? Phone? Camera?) out on display.
Take extra care to ensure that they can’t be seen through windows.
You can minimise the risk even further by drawing your curtains when you turn your lights on in the evening. As well as hiding what’s inside from view, this gives the impression that there’s somebody home.
Finally, it helps to be confident that you will be safe in the event of an emergency. If you’re living in halls, take some time to get familiar with the Fire Regulations set out in the Resident Students’ Handbook. If you’re living in private accommodation, make sure that you have a working smoke alarm and that you test it regularly. Wherever you’re living, come up with an escape plan in case you do need to evacuate.
During your time at University, you’ll probably go on a few nights out. One of the most effective ways of staying safe while you’re out is staying with your group and looking out for each other. Don’t leave drinks unattended. Keep an eye on your personal belongings and on your drinks, and try not to travel alone.
It’s worth planning how you’re going to get home safely before you set off on a night out. Night buses run in London, and you can plan a journey using the TFL online tool.
Alternatively, if a few of you are going in the same direction, you could take a cab home. If you are taking this option, though, it’s important to make sure you’re taking a licensed cab. Find out about the Cabwise app from the Transport for London website to get your nearest licenced cab:
Go to the TFL website and register your mobile number, to be sent the Cabwise number to use when you need it.
Avoid walking on our own at night. If you need to, keep to well-lit and busy areas and avoid taking shortcuts.
