Your Officer team has been working hard to ensure GSU represents your academic interests and improves student life across the University. Read on to find out what they’ve all been up to.
Abdulmumin – GSU President
Abdulmumin held a Faith Forum meeting that enabled students to raise concerns around prayer spaces, staff behaviour, and facilities. He worked closely with the Chaplaincy team, welcoming a new Medway Chaplain and continuing discussions around Islamic Chaplaincy provision. Abdulmumin raised issues relating to ablution facilities, cleanliness, maintenance, and signage, while exploring options for improved or dedicated spaces.
He also met with University staff to narrow key priorities and discuss long-term timetabling plans, including new working groups for student input. While formal surveys were paused, he continued gathering student feedback to ensure concerns are shared and addressed.
Saif – GSU Officer
In January, Saif continued working on campaigns focused on improving student wellbeing, inclusion, and academic support across the University. Progress was made on the Better Study Spaces campaign through collaboration with the ILS team, using feedback from over 200 students to shape improvements at Stockwell Library and inform future work at Avery Hill.
Work also progressed on the Resit Toolkit, with key discussions helping to clarify its purpose and early content development underway to support students facing resits and academic pressure.
Student feedback was also used to inform future plans for the GRE app rebuild. Additionally, the Inclusive Leadership Audit restarted, focusing on reviewing EDI policies and developing a framework to improve outcomes for BAME students.
Hari – GSU Officer
Over the past month, Hari worked across several priority areas to improve student experience. He continued leading the Affordable Student Living in Kent campaign, focusing on housing affordability and exploring discount opportunities with local businesses.
Work progressed on student voice and representation, including improvements to the rep feedback system, faculty-level engagement, and increasing the visibility of course representatives. Hari represented students through Student Success Boards, Employability Forums, and academic councils, while working closely with the Advice Team to resolve student issues quickly.
A major milestone was completing planning for Green Den, launching on 6 February, alongside scheduling employability workshops and continuing community-building activities across campuses.
Chirag – GSU Officer
In January, Chirag represented students across a wide range of meetings, including School-level discussions, Student Success Boards, Academic Council, and University committees. He continued regular one-to-one representation work and contributed student feedback on digital services, sports provision, and commercial activity.
Chirag supported Varsity planning, helped interview for the Sports Coordinator role, and explored collaboration on the Victims’ Code campaign. He reviewed progress on Santander funding campaigns supporting thousands of students, while continuing work on accommodation challenges, bursaries, and timetabling improvements.
He also completed Scrutiny Panel reporting, engaged new students at the Welcome Fair, and gathered feedback across campuses to inform ongoing work.
