Greenwich Students’ Union Statement on the Meningococcal Meningitis Outbreak

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of a student death from meningitis at the University of Kent - see our statement here.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of a student death from meningitis at the University of Kent. Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends and the wider university community at this very difficult time.

The outbreak is believed to be linked to specific locations in Canterbury and at present there does not appear to be any specific, heightened risk to University of Greenwich students, including those based at the Medway campus.

We understand that news like this can be worrying; whilst is it believed there is no specific risk to University of Greenwich students, everyone should remain aware of the symptoms of meningitis and sepsis and what to do. The infection is rare but can become serious very quickly, so it’s important to know the symptoms and seek medical advice if you are concerned.

Students can find more information about meningitis symptoms on this Greenwich University webpage: gre.ac.uk/articles/public-relations/meningitis-awareness.Please remember if you feel unwell or are worried about symptoms, please contact NHS 111.

Students who are not from the local area should register at a GP (doctor) and Dentist to access treatment. For more information on getting registered for health services click here.
