At GSU, we are proud to celebrate students who use their time at university not only to learn but also to lead, create change, and support others. This Women’s History Month, we are excited to spotlight Daria Ilyushenkova, a final-year Law LLB student whose journey at Greenwich reflects determination, growth, and a deep commitment to justice.

A Journey Driven by Human Stories

For Daria, law has never been just about textbooks or technical knowledge; it has always been about people. She chose to study Law because she was drawn to the way decisions shape lives, often quietly and without warning.

Her time at university became a space to explore curiosity with purpose. Through questioning, learning, and engaging with real experiences, Daria discovered that knowledge only feels meaningful when it leads to tangible impact.

This mindset continues to drive her today, not simply to understand the rules but to see beyond them and contribute to meaningful change.

Finding Her Place at Greenwich

From the beginning, Daria knew that attending lectures alone would not define her university experience. What truly motivated her was the opportunity to collaborate, create, and be actively involved in shaping the student community.

Her first steps into involvement led her to the Bar Society, the Legal Advice Centre, and the role of Academic Programme Representative. Participating in mock trials and mooting helped law “come alive", allowing her to experience the intensity of teamwork, problem-solving, and shared responsibility.

These early experiences transformed her curiosity into commitment, helping her build both confidence and direction.

Leadership Through Responsibility

Daria’s journey at Greenwich quickly evolved into leadership roles, including President and Treasurer of the Bar Society. These responsibilities went far beyond titles; they required planning, accountability, and the ability to guide others even when challenges arose.

Balancing leadership within the Bar Society alongside volunteering at the Legal Advice Centre ensured she stayed grounded in the real purpose of studying law: supporting people. Through these roles, she learned that effective leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room but about creating space for others to grow, contribute, and succeed.

Creating Meaningful Impact

Much of Daria’s impact has come through quiet but powerful moments. Supporting individuals at the Legal Advice Centre helped students and community members better understand their rights, turning uncertainty into clarity.

Within the Bar Society, she played a key role in organising events such as mock trials, the Non-Law Into Law Conference, and conversations with distinguished judges. These initiatives encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones and develop confidence in their abilities.

For Daria, the most meaningful achievements are not always the most visible; they are the moments where someone finds their voice or gains the confidence to pursue a new opportunity.

Growth Beyond the Classroom

Experiences such as visiting the UK Supreme Court allowed Daria to connect academic theory with real-world legal practice. These moments broadened her perspective, helping her understand the realities of legal decision-making and the responsibilities that come with it.

Navigating stress and high expectations also helped shape her resilience. Over time, she developed stronger self-belief, learning to prioritise effectively and approach challenges with confidence.

Achievements & Recognition

While Daria values personal growth over formal recognition, her contributions have been widely acknowledged. The Bar Society’s recognition as Best Academic Society of the Year (2024/25) reflects the collective effort and leadership she helped guide.

Through her work, she has built practical legal awareness, strong advocacy skills, and the ability to lead with clarity and intention.

Looking Ahead

Daria’s vision for the future is firmly rooted in legal practice. She plans to pursue a Master’s in Dispute Resolution, focusing on how legal systems can help resolve conflicts constructively and create long-term solutions. Her ambition is not only to succeed professionally but also to contribute meaningfully to a system that shapes people’s everyday lives.

A Message to Other Students

Daria encourages fellow students to embrace uncertainty and take initiative:

Ready never shows up; just start anyway.

She believes that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar spaces, getting involved in student life, and using platforms like GSU to discover strengths and passions.

Celebrating Women’s Voices at Greenwich

This Women’s History Month, Daria’s journey highlights the importance of representation, confidence, and the impact women continue to make across academic and professional spaces. Her story reflects how leadership, resilience, and purpose can shape meaningful change both within the university and beyond.

We are proud to feature Daria Ilyushenkova as part of our GSU Student Stories series.
