GSU Council is the highest decision-making body at Greenwich Students’ Union (GSU) The purpose is to reflect and represent the views of members.

Council sets out a course of action for the organisation and its representatives through the decisions it makes.

Attending and participating in GSU Council is open to all students. Any student can also submit an agenda item to be discussed at the meeting. This is just one way students can make a change at Greenwich.

What goes on

The function of GSU Council is to have reflective and informed discussion to lead to decision making that will:

  • Improve the student experience
  • Address disadvantages any groups of students are facing
  • Enforce what students expect and want from their Students’ Union and representation.

GSU Council is conducted through round table group deliberation. This means everyone has the opportunity to input their views and opinions through facilitated groups, working towards an agreed set of actions to address a particular issue affecting the student community. Therefore every single attendee is shaping proposals and policy through an engaging and accessible format.

The action points drafted by GSU Council are taken to an online vote from which our student representatives have the opportunity to vote on. Any student can attend GSU Council, but to vote you have to be a registered member. Please click the link below to sign up:

We request the installation of additional benches and small, sustainable litter bins across the Greenwich campus. This aims to improve student comfort, create more social and study-friendly outdoor spaces, and ensure the campus remains clean and welcoming.

    Action or Proposal

I propose that the University and GSU install a small number of well-designed, weather-resistant benches in high-traffic and high-sunlight areas across the Greenwich campus. Alongside them, add compact, sustainable litter bins that match the existing campus aesthetic. The investment required is small, but the impact on student experience would be significant.

    Context

Many students across Greenwich campus have expressed the need for more outdoor seating. At the moment, most of the existing benches are concentrated near the Dreadnought building, particularly in the shaded back area where sunlight is limited and fewer students naturally gather. By adding benches in sunnier, more accessible locations, we can create comfortable spots for students to rest between lectures, meet friends, or take a short break during the day. These small social spaces encourage community building, reduce overcrowding in indoor areas, and support overall wellbeing. Including a few small, sustainable litter bins next to these benches helps keep the campus clean without affecting its visual appeal. With bins that match the university’s aesthetic, the additions would blend in naturally with the environment. This proposal is simple, low-cost, and fully aligned with student feedback. Even a few extra benches and bins would make a noticeable difference to daily student life. All student requests are valued and taken seriously, and this addition would directly reflect student needs while improving the outdoor environment for everyone.
