honouring our communities

Our Black History Month exhibition 2026/27

Created with resources from the official Black History Month UK organisation.

Black History Month 2026 invites us to recognise the communities that shape, support and strengthen Britain. This year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities, reflects the fact that Black history is not only made through landmark events or by famous names.

DR ANDREW BROWN
HEALTH, WELLBEING & COMMUNITY
Dr Andrew Brown’s work begins with listening to people. Through Croydon BME Forum, he has connected Black and minoritised communities with health services, public bodies and practical support. His leadership keeps the lives behind the statistics in view and helps institutions respond effectively, fairly
and compassionately to the communities they serve.

AYAN MAHAMOUD MBE
ARTS, CULTURE & HERITAGE
Ayan Mahamoud MBE has created spaces where Somali art, literature and culture can be shared with confidence. Through Kayd Somali Arts and Culture and Somali Week, she has brought writers, artists and communities together, strengthened cultural pride and helped Somali stories reach wider audiences internationally, while preserving them for future generations.

PROF. ANNE-MARIE IMAFIDON MBE
STEM, EDUCATION & OPPORTUNITY
Professor Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE has inspired a new generation to see a future in science and technology. Through mathematics, computer science, education and her work widening access to STEM, she has challenged assumptions about who enters these fields and helped girls and young women recognise their ability to lead and succeed.

DEAN FOSTER
COMMUNITY ACTION & YOUTH SUPPORT
Through Peckham Soup Kitchen, Dean Foster has helped create a place that offers far more than food. The organisation provides dignity, practical help and
trusted support to families and young people facing difficult circumstances. His work responds to immediate need while also creating opportunities, encouragement and routes towards a more secure future.

DR JAK BEULA - NUBIAN JAK
ARTS, CULTURE & HERITAGE
Dr Jak Beula has made Black British history visible in the places where people live and walk every day. Through plaques, monuments and educational projects, he has placed overlooked lives and achievements into streets and public spaces,
creating a lasting record that communities can see, share and pass confidently to future generations.

DR MAHAMED HASHI
COMMUNITY ACTION, HOMELESSNESS & SAFETY
Dr Mahamed Hashi has turned lived experience into action against homelessness, poverty and violence. From Brixton Soup Kitchen to community safety work, he has brought communities and public services together to address problems. His leadership is grounded in understanding what people face and responding directly where practical help is most needed.

DR MYRTLE EMMANUEL
EDUCATION, EQUALITY & INSTITUTIONAL CHANGE
Dr Myrtle Emmanuel uses education and race equality work to challenge inequality within institutions. By placing students’ lived experiences at the centre of change, she has helped reshape teaching, policy and university practice. Her work shows that progress begins by listening to those most affected and acting on what they say.

PROF. DIANE ASHIRU-OREDOPE
PUBLIC HEALTH, PHARMACY & SCIENCE
Professor Diane Ashiru-Oredope’s pioneering work in public health has helped protect lives and shape global thinking on antimicrobial resistance. Through research, professional leadership and the Antibiotic Guardian campaign, she has influenced practice in Britain and internationally while inspiring a new generation of pharmacists and healthcare leaders and championing greater professional equality.
