Prior to Greenwich, Niel immersed himself in youth work in his native Guyana through a number of projects including supporting young offenders at the Sophia Detention Centre through offering them personal and academic support, and in his role as an assistant programme manager for a USAID program supporting at-risk youth from impoverished backgrounds, creating opportunities for them through offering programmes in numeracy, music, art and literacy. In 2017-18, Niel organised a successful campaign against the Guyanese government’s instillation of VAT on tuition fees. These efforts saw him become the first recipient of the ‘Othniel Lewis Service Award' – an award established in his honour for a continuous commitment to improving the world around us.

Since starting his student career in Greenwich, Niel has engaged in various volunteering & leadership roles including working with the Sustainability Development Unit as a project assistant, volunteering as a case worker with the Innocence Project to bring justice to the wrongfully accused, and most prominently, being elected to the position of GSU Officer with a keen focus on making Greenwich green.
