The menu above will lead you to some profiles and portraits of Greenwich staff and students; resources for reading and learning; and seeing what events we're running across each campus throughout October.

The exhibition link above takes you to our online exhibit, celebrating our sisters.

You can also join the African and Caribbean (ACS) Society at Greenwich or the Afro-Caribbean Society at Medway and take part in their activites throughout the year.

We will be adding to our events, information and exhibits throughout October. Please keep an eye on this website for more details throughout Black History Month!

a message from your gsu officer

Written by: Sodiq Lawal

As a Black student hailing from Nigeria, I am proud to serve as the representative for students of colour at Greenwich Student Union (GSU). It is with great enthusiasm and determination that I introduce Black History Month to our diverse student body. This annual observance holds immense personal significance for me, and it symbolizes a shared commitment to inclusivity, equality, and community among all GSU students.

Why does Black History Month matter?

Black History Month, celebrated in various parts of the world, is an occasion that transcends borders and backgrounds. It is not only an opportunity to reflect on the rich history and contributions of the Black community but also a platform to advocate for justice, equality, and unity. Here's why this month is important to me, and should be to all of us:

Acknowledging our Roots:

Black History Month is a chance to acknowledge the diverse origins of our student body. As a Nigerian student, I recognize the importance of celebrating the unique cultural heritages of Black students from all over the world. This month allows us to honor our roots while embracing the multicultural tapestry that makes GSU so vibrant.

Equality and Oppertunity:

Black History Month reminds us of the ongoing struggles for racial equality and the need to address systemic barriers that hinder progress. At GSU, our goal is to provide equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their racial or ethnic background. We aim to create a level playing field where every student can thrive academically, professionally, and personally.

Sense of Community and Belonging:

GSU is more than just an institution; it's a community. During Black History Month, we strengthen our sense of belonging and unity. It's a time to come together, celebrate our shared experiences, and support one another on our educational journeys.

What I Want GSU to Achieve for Black Students.

As your representative at GSU, my primary focus is to ensure that the voices of Black and other minority ethnic students are not only heard but valued. Here are some key objectives I aim to achieve:

Equal Opportunity:

I am dedicated to advocating for policies and initiatives that promote equal access to resources, scholarships, and academic support for all students.

Cultural Appreciation:

We will work to foster a more comprehensive understanding and appreciation of Black cultures through events, workshops, and curriculum enhancements. This will help create a more inclusive learning environment.

Sense of Community:

GSU should be a place where every student feels a deep sense of belonging. We will facilitate events and activities that encourage interaction, dialogue, and a stronger community spirit.

Representation:

It's vital that our student body is represented at all levels of the university. We will strive to increase representation among faculty, staff, and administrators to better reflect the diversity of our students.

In Conclusion.

Black History Month is a time for reflection, celebration, and action. It's an opportunity to recognize the rich tapestry of Black history and culture while striving for a more inclusive and equitable future. Together, as a diverse and united student body, we can achieve greatness at GSU and ensure that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to excel and feel a profound sense of belonging within our academic community.
