Hello I’m Meike, the current Greenwich Students’ Union President. NUS is the National Union of Students and we are an affiliated member of the NUS (https://www.nus.org.uk/en/who-we-are/). They hold an annual National Conference in April which discusses issues that affect students on a national level.
I first attended the NUS National Conference last year in April 2017. I had mixed experiences which made me want to get more involved to understand the NUS better and to understand how our Greenwich students benefit from it. I got elected on the National Union Development Committee, appointed as a NUS Trustee/Director and attended this year’s Conference as well.
NUS has never been a priority for our students and there is still a long way to go. If re-elected I will utilise my in-depth experience and ensure that all NUS Delegates are trained properly, know everything they need to know, feel empowered to join the national debates and build on Greenwich getting more involved for our students in future.
The NUS has a lot potential, but there is a hostile political culture and other challenges which hinder the NUS from driving and implementing positive changes for all students on a national level. Most students have no idea what the NUS is, let alone how they as individuals benefit from NUS and from the decisions that are made for students on a national level.
Cultural changes within the NUS are desperately needed and I am considering running as National President next year to drive those necessary changes! This role would help me with that.
Elect me as 1# NUS Delegate so I can support new delegates, drive changes for Greenwich students on a national level and utilise my experience to challenge the NUS for the change that is needed for all students.
