Empowering Students, Creating Change!

Hello everyone! My name is Abdulmumin, and I am a final year Mathematics student running to be your next Greenwich Students’ Union Officer. As a passionate and dedicated student, I have always been committed to making positive changes within our university community. I believe every student deserves a supportive, and enriching experience here at Greenwich. Throughout my time here, I have engaged with students from all backgrounds, listened to their concerns, and identified key areas where we need real change. I am running because I want to be a strong voice for all students, ensuring that your needs, ideas, and challenges are heard and addressed. With your support, we can make Greenwich a better place for everyone. Now, let’s talk about what I will push for if elected 1. Improved Multi-Faith Facilities Our university is home to students from a range of backgrounds, yet our multi-faith spaces are often too small or not well-equipped. I will: • Advocate for larger and more accessible multi-faith facilities. • Push for better resources, including prayer mats, wash areas, and quiet spaces for meditation and reflection. • Ensure these spaces are well-maintained, and open to all faith groups. 2. More Practical Studies in University curriculum The university has a massive representation in number of students and from speaking to them I have discovered a recurring theme within the opinions of their studies. Theoretical knowledge is valuable, but students need practical experience to succeed in the real world. I will: • Work with the university to integrate more practical case studies, projects, and industry and subject based simulations. • Push for more guest lectures and workshops led by industry professionals. • Advocate for more work placements and hands-on learning opportunities within the curriculum. 3. Tackling the Cost-of-Living Crisis Student expenses are rising, making it harder to focus on studies. I will: • Campaign for increased financial aid, hardship funds, and bursaries for struggling students. • Work to reinstate a student food bank to support those in need. • Advocate for fairer pricing in campus food outlets to ensure affordability for all students. 4. Boosting Employability and Career Opportunities Securing a good job after university should be easier. I will: • Work with the university to host more career fairs, inviting top employers from various industries. • Push for increased internship, placement, and shadowing work experience opportunities. • Provide more CV workshops, interview training, and career mentorship programs. 5. Supporting International Students International students face a unique set of challenges. I will: • Advocate for clearer guidance for a better adaptability to a new environment • Create more cultural exchange events to help international and home students connect. • Push for better financial support and advice services tailored to international students. 6. Prioritizing Mental Health and Wellbeing Mental health must be taken seriously. I will: • Promote mental health awareness through regular events and campaigns. • Push for increased access to counselling services and well-being support. • Introduce peer-support programs to create safe spaces for students to talk and connect. 7. Strengthening Alumni and Student Mentorship Building bridges between past and current students can open doors. I will: • Establish a mentor scheme where alumni guide and support current students in their career paths and studies. • Create an alumni-student networking platform for job opportunities and career advice. • Encourage graduates to stay connected and give back to the university community. 8. University-College-School Networking Students should be able to give back and inspire the next generation. I will: • Aim to create a university mentoring scheme where students can support sixth form and college students. • Build relationships with schools to host subject-based workshops and career talks. • Encourage projects that allow university students to inspire and guide younger students in their academic journeys. 9. Holding the University Accountable The university must prioritize student needs. I will: • Actively listen to students' concerns and raise them with the university leadership. • Push for greater transparency in decision-making and student services. • Hold regular feedback sessions so students' voices drive meaningful change. 10. Better and More Diverse Food Options Food options should cater to all dietary needs. I will: • Advocate for more halal, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options in campus food outlets. • Push for more affordable and nutritious meal choices. • Work with food providers to ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all students. Greenwich is a diverse, dynamic, and talented student community, and we deserve a student union that reflects our needs. I am committed to making real changes that enhance our university experience. If you believe in a stronger, fairer, and more inclusive Greenwich, vote for me as your next GSU Officer. Together, we can create a better future for all students!
