Who are we?

Public health is more than policies, statistics, and theory—it is about people, lived experiences, and the conversations that shape healthier communities.

The Greenwich Public Health Society was originally founded in 2023 by Ewaen Ero with a vision to create a platform where students could engage with public health issues beyond the classroom. Following a period of inactivity during 2024, the society was re-established in 2025 and has since experienced significant growth under the leadership of current President Unaisa Juairia.

Working alongside a dedicated committee including Yasemin Ozturk, Annam Sheraz, Jessica George, Olivia Roberts, and many other students and faculty members, the society has become a vibrant space for education, advocacy, collaboration, and meaningful dialogue.

Since its relaunch, the Greenwich Public Health Society has organised a wide range of initiatives, including public health symposiums, conferences, employability workshops, focus groups, support groups, awareness campaigns, and community engagement events. These activities have provided students with opportunities to develop professionally, engage with current public health challenges, and contribute to conversations that matter.

One of the society's most impactful projects has been In Her Own Words, a student-led short film exploring breast cancer through lived experiences. Directed by Unaisa Juairia, featuring Yasemin Ozturk, and filmed and edited by Tommy Digo, the project brought together students, advocates, survivors, and members of the wider university community to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection and screening.

Published in 2026, the film sought to challenge the stigma and taboos surrounding breast cancer, particularly within communities where discussions around health, gender, and cancer are often limited. Through personal storytelling and education, the project encouraged open conversations, promoted cultural understanding, and highlighted the life-saving importance of early screening and intervention.

Alongside this project, the society has hosted:

  • Public health symposiums and conferences featuring healthcare professionals and academic experts

  • Employability and career development workshops

  • Focus groups and support groups that create safe spaces for discussion

  • Awareness campaigns addressing health inequalities and public health challenges

  • Interactive events designed to encourage critical thinking, advocacy, and community engagement

At the Greenwich Public Health Society, we do not claim to have all the answers. Instead, we aim to ask important questions, challenge assumptions, amplify underrepresented voices, and empower students to become future leaders in public health.

Looking ahead, the society is preparing to launch a new campaign during the 2026–2027 academic year focused on domestic abuse and coercive control. This initiative will continue our commitment to raising awareness of complex public health issues, supporting vulnerable communities, and transforming conversations into meaningful action.

Whether you study in the public health field or simply care about the issues affecting society, this is a place where your voice matters.

Join us. Get involved. Be part of the conversation.
