Balkan Society

Who are we?

Ladies and Gents, this is the Balkan Society of University of Greenwich, so we would like to wish a warm welcome!

It might be appropriate to start with a short description of the Balkans. The Balkans, or the Balkan Peninsula, is a geographic area in south eastern Europe which takes its name from the Balkan Mountains that stretch from the Serbian-Bulgarian border to the Black Sea. However, one of our purposes is to create a community not only for those who are from this area, but for those who either have friends from there or are just interested in our culture.

Now that we have made an introduction, it is important to present the reasons for which we created the society. There are a lot of societies for particular countries, but none of them is as inclusive as what we had in mind. The Balkans are a significant part of Europe, so the main aim is to bring everyone from the area (and not only) together, and to promote the culture, traditions and customs, that are similar yet different in the same time. We will organize events, meeting and open days, which will include food and drink tasting, ‘ lessons’ of the Slavic or Latin origin languages, or methods of celebrating holidays during the calendar year. Moreover, we do like to show off with the food and drinks that are specific to the region!

To draw a conclusion, these are the main points we would like you to know from the start. As you can see, we have big plans and we are excited to make this society progress. We will make sure to keep you posted!
