Matthew explains how being a student at Greenwich helps to break stereotypes.

Greenwich Students' Union continues the #ProudToBeGRE profiles highlighting Black students.

What do you study at the University of Greenwich?

I am a second-year student studying Digital and Video Production, I am also part of the Football team.

What attracted you to the University of Greenwich?

The reputation of the university. I did not want Uni to just be about parties, I was very interested in the course and how good it was for video editing.

What makes you Proud to be GRE?

Just because it is very diverse, I don't feel like I am alone, there are a lot of girls and guys from a similar background so it makes it easier to fit in.

What are you proud of being a BME student?

Because I am from London, being a typical "Black London Boy" can make people assume stereotypes but when people get to know me,  there is more to me than just that.

So being a student, it’s breaking down a stereotype, that people just assume that I belong to.

Do you have any advice for new students starting?

Talk to as many people as possible, and find people that are like-minded, and stick with them. They will make your experience easier for the remaining years. Make sure to put yourself out there as much as possible for internships and any extracurricular work.

What opportunities has The University of Greenwich given to you?

Access to equipment that I have never used before and the confidence to put myself out there. For the first year, I got a big internship that allowed me to work me with Spotify and BBC.
