BAME Attainment Gap

  • The fact is there is a higher percentage of white students (77.1%) who achieve a 2:1 or above compared to BAME students (61.7%).

I believe the policies in place within the university are too relaxed and they are not making much progress as it stands. Most students aren’t aware of the size of the gap and it needs to be showcased and taught more. The university has started with consultation groups but that is limited, exhibitions should be placed across universities to grip a wider audience where we can receive greater ideas to help reduce it.

Reading Week

  • In most programmes within the Business Faculty, reading week is not provided.

I understand its mainly for students who have a lot of assessments as opportunity to allow them to catch up, however it can be phrased as a study week. This is just to catch up for the term so far therefore students don’t feel as overwhelmed by the work load and have positive impact on student’s mental health. This week could include things such as drop-in sessions with lecturers and stressbusters.

Improved Mentoring Scheme

  • The mentoring scheme which is currently in existence helps some students, however not all.

All students should have access to a mentor where they can ask questions about the field or about the subject which would not be classroom based or they feel uncomfortable to ask their lecturer. In year one all students should be provided with a mentor, even if it is where the only contact you have is not face to face but email.
